Tunisia: 2 Migrants Killed 1 Missing

Two unidentified bodies were found off Tunisia’s eastern coast after a migrant boat capsized. In addition to the bodies, 28 people were rescued, and one person is still missing.

The boat had departed from Teboulba, a coastal town located 180 kilometers south of the capital, Tunis. Most of the passengers were reportedly Tunisian.

Tunisia and Libya are major departure points for migrants, many of whom are from other African countries. They risk dangerous Mediterranean crossings in hopes of reaching Europe, with Italy being a common first stop.

Similar tragedies have occurred recently. In late October, 15 bodies were recovered from a boat disaster in Monastir, while 36 migrants were rescued off Bizerte in late September.

Since January, over 100 makeshift boats have capsized off Tunisia, with 341 bodies recovered. In total, more than 1,300 people died or disappeared in shipwrecks last year.
