Rabat – Months after Fiorentina rejected its offer to sign Sofyan Amrabat, FC Barcelona is reported to still be interested in securing a deal with the Italian club for the Moroccan midfielder.
According to the news website Sport, Barcelona’s interest in players of Amrabat’s profile is part of its ambition to bolster its midfield.
“The idea is to sign Gundogan, although there is still no financial agreement with the player, and a more physical player, who would be Sofyan Amrabat,” the news outlet said.
Football Italia, another sports news outlet, confirmed the news, reporting that Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez wants Amrabat at “all costs.”
This is not the first time that FC Barcelona has shown interest in the Moroccan football star.
Amrabat’s fairytale performances at the 2022 World Cup landed him on the radar of many elite European, most notably including FC Barcelona.
Last January, converging reports indicated that Barcelona was close to signing the Moroccan midfielder in the winter transfer window.
But the CEO of Fiorentina, Joe Barone, said Amrabat was not for sale.
Fiorentina is reportedly seeking to secure €40 million for Amrabat and “is not prepared to make any major discounts,” according to Football Italia.
In March, reports stressed that Arabat is still dreaming of joining FC Barcelona.
“Sofyan Amrabat eventually stayed at Fiorentina during the winter transfer window. But this summer, he is set to leave Italy while he still dreams of joining FC Barcelona,” Foot Mercato said.
Sofyan’s brother, Nordin Amrabat, acknowledged that Fiorentina’s rejection of Barcelona’s offer prevented his younger brother from joining his dream club.
Sofyan “really wanted to go to Barca and had a lot of hope that the whole operation could happen,” Nordin said in an interview with ESPN, stressing that the Spanish club tabled a good offer for the loan “but Fiorentina did not let him go.”
