The Vietnamese and Japanese coast guards held talks in Hanoi on Feb. 21 to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation.
Senior Col. Vu Trung Kien, deputy commander in charge of Vietnamese force law, noted that bilateral cooperation is on the right track, saying more and deeper collaboration will be carried out in the coming times.
Vice Commander Shiraishi Masami said Vietnam is an important partner and hoped the good cooperation will help promote safety, security and freedom of navigation for the peace, stability and development of the two countries, as well as the region and the world.
The two sides reached consensus on plans to conduct and promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation activities in 2023, including strengthening law enforcement training at sea, organizing in Japan for the 10th conference between the two forces, the management of delegation exchange programs at all levels, friendly visits of ships from both parties in order to strengthen cooperation and share experiences.
Bilateral relations have seen robust development since the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding in September 2015.
The Japanese Coast Guard sent eight patrol boats to visit and held several exchanges of joint sea search and rescue exercises with the Vietnamese Coast Guard.
They also organized six exchange programs on the coastguard legal system and law enforcement experience at sea, as well as a training course on shipboard search procedures.
In addition, the Japan Coast Guard has coordinated with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to provide refresher courses on maritime law enforcement, search and rescue and environmental protection. to the Vietnamese Coast Guard.
